Handmade Koras

The kora is the soul of West African music, a 21-string harp-lute with a sound somewhere between a harp and a flamenco guitar. At Adaptatrap we don’t just sell koras; we make them by hand.

What is a kora?

The kora has a large calabash-gourd body covered with a stretched skin, a long hardwood neck, and classically 21 strings in two ranks. The player plucks with the thumbs and forefingers of both hands, producing flowing, interweaving lines that can sound like several instruments at once.

Made by hand

Every Adaptatrap kora is built by Les Sherwood. No two are identical: each is shaped, fitted and tuned individually.

Koras are individually priced based on the size and the components used to make them.

Kora FAQ

Are they made to order? Do you have stock?

We occasionally have a few ready built koras available online and in the shop but generally most people prefer their kora to be made to order. This means Les can add your choice of tuning, pickups and so on.

How long does it take to make a kora?

It depends how busy Les is and what components you would like to use. For example, some of the semi-tone levers come from France so they will take a bit longer. Usually they take around 2-3 weeks to produce.

How much will it cost?

Les will work out a price with you that will vary depending on your requirements and the components chosen. some components fluctuate in price throughout the year but they start from around £375 to £450. Chromatic koras with semi tone levers will go up to around £1,100 due to the extra components required.

Can I use my own calabash?

Yes, Les can usually accomodate making one using your own calabash!

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping is calculated based on your location and the size of the final product. They are carefully packaged up in cardboard and sent to your address.

Can you repair my Kora?

Probably! Contact us with the specific problem and Les will get back to you to discuss a repair.
