A small, colourful double-headed Indian drum with a mango-wood shell and a bright, party-ready voice. Rope-and-ring tensioning lets you tune each head higher or lower, and it's usually played with bare hands — slung from the shoulder, resting in the lap, or on the floor. Born in India, the dholak now turns up in folk, devotional and pop music right across the world.
